“About Cats” Part 3

Duck is the common name shared by several species of waterfowl.part of the family that belongs toAnatidae, and in general, ducks are smaller and have shorter necks compared togeese and swans. They are divided into several subfamilies and exist as classification groups, but they do not represent a monophyletic group (a group that includes all descendants of one common ancestor) because geese and swans are not considered ducks. Ducks are primarilyaquatic birds and can live in both freshwater and seawater.

Overall, the body shape of ducks is slender and broad, with a relatively long neck, though not as long as that of geese and swans. Diving ducks have a somewhat rounder body shape. The bill is usually broad with serrated edges, which are well developed particularly in species that filter feed. In species that hunt fish, the bill is long and strongly serrated. The scaled legs are well developed and generally located at the back of the body, which is more pronounced in aquatic species, usually having webbed feet. Feathers are very strong and generally short and pointed, requiring strong wing muscles for rapid and continuous flapping during flight. However, three species of shovelers can barely fly. Many duck species become temporarily flightless during themolt period, during which they seek sheltered habitats with a good food supply. This molting process usually occursbefore migration.

Some duck species, especially those breeding in temperate and Arctic regions of the Northern Hemisphere, do migrate. Ducks in tropical regions usually do not. In Australia, where rainfall is irregular, ducks are highly mobile, seeking temporary lakes and ponds that form after local rains.

Ducks eatgrass, aquatic plants, fish, insects, small amphibians, worms, andsmall mollusks, among others.

If it walks like a duck and sounds like a duck, you can be quite sure it’s a duck.
